Our approach for serving the people of the Philippines is drawn from a theology of liberation. The presence of Christ in the world is made known through those that are his servants, his friends, his body. Contrary to the practice of Christendom, we choose to develop people rather than build ‘churches’. We choose to build communities of believers that will serve as light to the surrounding society. We choose to address deeply entrenched problems with well thought out efforts, rather than think that large amounts of money can address the spiritual and physical needs of people.
Our approach is to come as servants that teach people how to follow Christ everyday. Our liberative practice focuses on the poor and oppressed as persons ready to receive the reign of God in all of its ramifications. Through the empowerment of education and community building we teach the poor and oppressed to help one another, since it is obvious that no one else is going to help them.
We position ourselves alongside the widows and orphans, the homeless and the squatter, the prostitute and the slave, the incarcerated and the persecuted. The reality of the world is seen through the eyes of these persons; it is the reality that God insists we address. With faith and forgiveness we bring the presence of the nonviolent Christ into their lives. Their lives are filled with the violence of injustice; they suffer the failure of modernism and its rush to develop the world into a paved road, a road leading to despair for most of humanity.
